Confirmation
of Payee
Feel more confident that your money is going where you intend it to, with Confirmation of Payee.
Extra layer of scam defence
In December 2025, phase one of Confirmation of Payee was introduced which aims to help keep your payments safer.
Confirmation of Payee provides a layer of protection when making payments. It provides additional scam prevention measures when you make a payment using a BSB and account number, by checking the details you enter against the account information held by the recipient’s bank. You’ll then see a match result in internet banking or mobile app before you proceed, giving you greater confidence and the ability to make an informed decision before completing your payment.
What is Confirmation of Payee?
Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that matches the bank account details entered by a payer with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and displays a match outcome to the payer. It’s a new layer of protection for Australian consumers and businesses when they’re making a payment to a BSB and account number.
How it works
Confirmation of Payee matches the bank account details entered by the payer with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and displays the outcome.
The payer can then make an informed decision about what to do next – pay, check the details again or choose not to proceed with the payment altogether.
Match
The account details you entered match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient’s name will be displayed.
Close Match
The account details you entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient’s name will be displayed.
No Match
The account details you entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient.
The recipients name will not be displayed unless it is a business or government organisation.
Error
The service could not confirm the account details you entered match.
How am I protected?
Pay with confidence – Before you send money, the service checks the account details you’ve entered against the recipient’s bank, helping you feel confident your payment is going to the right place.
Help prevent scams – By confirming payee details upfront, you can spot potential scams and reduce the risk of sending money to the wrong person.
Phase 1 – from 1 December 2025
On the 1st of December 2025, we enabled the first phase of Confirmation of Payee.
This means that other payers will be able to confirm your account name against the details you provided before they make a payment to your account with us.
Then, from early this year, Phase two will be introduced which means you’ll have access to perform these checks on payments you initiate from withing our Internet Banking and Mobile App services.
FAQs
Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that adds a layer of protection for payments to a BSB and account number. It checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank and lets you know whether it’s a match. This can help you make informed decisions before you make a payment, reducing the risk of scams and mistaken payments.
You don’t need to do anything. Once launched, Confirmation of Payee will be available in Internet Banking and the Mobile Banking App. When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, or edit a payee’s BSB and account number, you will be given the match result before you make a payment.
When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee checks the details you enter against the name, BSB and account number held by the recipient’s bank and gives you a match outcome. That helps you decide what you want to do next – and gives you more confidence that the money you’re paying is going to the right account.
Confirmation of Payee checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank to let you know whether it’s a match or a close match – or if the details don’t match at all. All Confirmation of Payee information is passed securely between financial institutions to ensure your data remains safe.
If you are receiving money into a personal account, the person who’s paying you will be shown the account name only if the name they have entered is a match or a close match. If any of these details are incorrect, the name will not be shown to protect your privacy.
If you’re a business or government organisation account that’s receiving a payment, the name of your account will be shown to the payer, regardless of whether it’s a match or not.
